How does Harley speed sensor work?
The speed sensor in your Harley Davidson Softail is designed to tell the bike’s computer how fast you are moving, which in turn sends that information to the speedometer, the turn signal auto cancel feature, and the ignition as well as fuel injection maps.
Why does my Speedo not work on my Harley?
Speedo works when it wants but only at highway speeds and again randomly. Now blinkers are starting too work intermittently. Any ideas? If your speedometer (and odometer) is not working, your turn signals are not going to autocancel. No indication to the module that you have gone anywhere. Find and fix the speedo problem (cable or drive unit) and your turns will work fine. Same thing happened to my 93 Heritage.

FMH Reply: Michael, check out your ECM plug. Disconnect it from the ECM and blow it out with compressed air. Reassemble with electric grease. You should also do the same with your TSSM (turn signal security module) and its plug. You did not mention any modifications to this m/c. That info is usually helpful. Reply: Thanks you.

Michael’s Reply: Purchased 2007 Heritage Special, August 2012 with 10,477 miles on it. The problem randomly while riding the 6th gear indicator will go out, the speedometer drops to “0”, odometer stays on but stops recording mileage, no codes are displayed.

Also heavy oil buildup on your crank sensor will cause speedo problems. I have a 2001 Road King FLHR that I bought used. It died on the way home and then two more times. There used to be a universal cable available from Champ or Help if my memory serves me correctly. Reach around behind the speedometer or remove the instrument cluster to gain access and disconnect the speedometer cable from the speedometer.
