How do you know if you have a bad starter on a motorcycle?
Symptoms of a bad motorcycle starter may include the motorcycle not being able to start at all, the motorcycle only starting intermittently, hearing the starter running even when the engine has already started, and being able to hear a strange clicking sound from the starter.
What to do when your motorcycle starter spins?
You may have to take the side cover off the engine, to hold the drive in position to mate the starter. For example, my CB450’s starter has a spline on the output, and the sprocket that mates it will drop down inside the case when the starter is pulled.
Why does my motorcycle not start when I turn it on?
Clogged Injector Symptoms of a clogged injector: Your motorcycle will attempt to turn over normally when you try to start it but there won’t be any combustion. If you know it’s sparking correctly and that there is gas in the tank but it has been sitting for a while, your culprit is probably a clogged fuel injector.
Why does the starter spin but not turn the engine?
If the large gear is spinning, removing the motor was a coincidence. Unless, somehow, the starter motor is running backwards. That could only happen if you reversed the brush connections after you cleaned them. Looking at the gears, does the large gear spin clockwise when the starter runs?
How does a motorcycle clutch turn the engine?
That clutch is usually comprised of a number of free-moving parts, like rollers, that roll or slide up a ramp, until they can’t move any farther, and lock the input side of the clutch to the rotor, turning the engine.
What makes a motorcycle make a grinding noise?
A wheel bearing failure while underway can cause wheel lock and a crash. Another sound that may come up is a peculiar grinding or clunking sound I’ve heard in combination when the spline of the rear drive gear on a shaft-drive bike is in need of greasing.
Why does my starter make a grinding noise?
Either the gear has stripped or has become, dislodged against the flywheel. A worn starter drive gear not making proper contact with the flywheel, could make this noise. This is similar to the one that is heard if you start your engine and then, accidentally restart it. However, grinding may also happen, inside the starting motor.
You may have to take the side cover off the engine, to hold the drive in position to mate the starter. For example, my CB450’s starter has a spline on the output, and the sprocket that mates it will drop down inside the case when the starter is pulled.
Why does the starter spin faster than the crankshaft?
The small gear that the starter fits into is not the clutch, but should drive a larger gear to gain mechanical advantage; basically the starter spins faster than the crankshaft. Some have multiple gears, like a transmission, for reasons known only to the designer.
