What is open belt drive?
In open belt drive, belt proceeds from top of one pulley to the top of other pulley without crossing. In crossed belt drive, belt proceeds from top of one pulley to the bottom of other pulley and thus crosses itself. In open belt drive, driving shaft and driven shaft rotate in same direction.
Why did Harley switch to belt drive?
Harley uses belts because they’re clean, quiet and require less frequent routine maintenance. Compared to chains and shaft drive, they’re also lighter too, which is important to reduce unsprung and rotating weight.
Where is the cross belt used instead of open belt?

Can a BDL belt drive fit an OEM mainshaft?
All of BDL’s products are designed to fit stock OEM Harley parts. Some aftermarket mainshafts are oversized which will make our hub feel too tight. If you try the BDL hub on a stock OEM mainshaft you will note that it fits perfectly. My BDL open drive has a loud rattle coming from the clutch.

What kind of drive does shovel Shorty use?
New from BDL is our SHS-600 Shovel Shorty 2″ electric start drive. The kit is a 2″ electric start set up with a rear plate that covers the trans for support for the rear clutch basket. Our 3″ drives are made out of 356-T6 aluminum, all pulleys are cast in our own foundry and completely machined in house.
