Is there a problem with replacing the selenium rectifier?
I’m recapping a small preamp and want to replace the selenium rectifier. This is on an analog chime system that has small pickups on little chime bars that are struck by solenoids. The preamp is built around a 12AX7 tube. I finished the recap and verified all the resistors are in tolerance.
Do you need higher series resistance for silicon rectifier?
Les. It isn’t just the higher resistance of a selenium rectifier, it’s their inherent voltage drop of perhaps 5 to 10V that you need to account for when changing to a silicon rectifier. So, as Les noted you will need a much higher series resistance to generate that much drop if the load is only a couple mA.
What kind of current does a rectifier have?
Rectifiers and output valves have higher current heaters than valves handling only small signals. When more than one heater circuit is employed, they are sometimes different voltages. For example, a separately driven rectifier valve heater may be rated at 4V, while the remaining valve heaters are 6.3V. AC/DC Sets
How many silicon diodes are in a selenium rectifier?
You can simulate selenium diodes with high-voltage silicon diodes. They also consist of a series of sequentially connected diodes and many volts fall on them. The higher the voltage diodes, the greater the voltage drop. Or you can take 17 low-power diodes (e.g. 1n4148) included in the series.
Is there a 100 amp rectifier rebuild kit?
100 Amp Rectifier Rebuild Kit Contains All Components to Rebuild Burned-Out Associated Eqpt Rectifiers w/10-Spoke Fusible Plate 610100, 610122, 610364, PowerForged types 696600, 696601, 696604, 696605 . Only 17 left in stock – order soon.
Can a selenium stack replace a Type 80 rectifier?
Two small selenium “stacks” could easily replace a type 80 or 5Y3 vacuum tube rectifier in many circuits. Since each plate of the selenium stack could support about 30 volts, you will typ- ically find 5 or 6 plates in a 120 Vrms rectifier. Tube rectifiers need filament power to ther- mally stimulate electron flow.
What’s the difference between selenium and tube rectifier?
• Selenium is “self-healing.” A short-term volt- age spike might “zap” the selenium film, but it soon heals itself and functions again. • When used in 120 Vrms rectifier circuits, the selenium unit had a drop or loss of only about 5 to 10 volts while the tube rectifier drop was 10 to 25 volts.
