What was the problem with my Mitsubishi Pajero?
Twelve months ago while traveling down the highway towing my caravan, the left rear axle on my 2004 Mitsubishi Pajero came out of the diff. The mechanic who repaired the axle thought the circlip had failed. Six months later I had the same problem occur again.

How do you repair differential on Pajero 4×4?
1) Place transmission in Neutral. Block front wheels. Raise one rear wheel off ground and remove wheel. Release parking brake. 2) Using torque wrench and axle puller adapter, measure starting torque while rotating wheel in forward direction. See Fig. 1. Differential must be repaired if torque is less than 18 ft. lbs. (25 N.m).
Can a Pajero Gen 3 be removed from the diff?
Any advice would be appreciated. Yes it can be done, I did both of mine when I upgraded my companion shafts to the one with bigger circlip on my gen 3 . Need to remove the rear wheel in question, undo the side shaft from companion shaft that resides in the diff. Pop the companion shaft out of the diff, using a crow bar or slide hammer.

When change 2wd to 4wd and vice versa, the actuator moves the actuator shaft, and its position is monitored by the free wheel engage switch. If the actuator is moving and the shaft is free, then the next check is the free wheel engage switch.

How can I check the oil level on my Pajero 4×4?
Check the transfer box oil and front differential oil levels. Remove the top filler plug, both should be filled to the level of the bottom of the fill hole. Any foul/burnt smell gritty texture indicates the oil is spent and an oil change is needed. Identify the correct oil from your manual.
