I have a 2000 model Mitsubishi Lancer MR, and today suddenly the speedometer and tachometer have stopped working. It has been very damn hot in Sydney these past few weeks. Does this heat have anything to do with it?

Op it’s not as bad a job to diy the instrument cluster is quite easy, the trim is removed to give access to the cluster mounting bolts/screws, with those removed you can simply remove the cluster to disconnect the connections on the rear and slide out. Others are a slight change in steering column trim or wheel adjustment to allow removal.

If you read some of the search links it’s really not a big job, these cars are extremely basic and with even a skerrick of mechanical aptitude you’ll have it out in under 10 minutes. Lower the wheel and it looks like you can take it right out, only need a screwdriver.

Toom it to Mitsubishi who said that the problem was there was a crack in the pcb. When it was hot the crack expanded making the gauges not work (speedo odometer etc) but dummy lights still worked.

Where is the PCB printed on a Mitsubishi Lancer?

Mitsubishi took some shortcuts in that era. The PCB (circuit board) is printed on a flimsy plastic sheet which is wrapped over the back of the cluster. The hot sun gradually expands the plastic which stresses the copper and it cracks, often at the top of the cluster.
