When to replace stem seals on Mercedes Benz?
1985 500SEC, 1991 190E 2.6. Not sure about the air pressure needed, but beside the valve cover gaskets you’ll need new copper crush washers (one time use) to go under the bolt heads. There are multiple write ups in the archive to be found with a ‘stem seals’ etc forum search.
Do you need a valve spring compressor for a Mercedes?
You’ll need a valve spring compressor for the Benz SOHC V8 engines, a fitting to pressurize the cylinders (I bring each respective cylinder to TDC JIC!!!).. Do-able job, just time consuming..and if your engine has over 150-175,000 miles it really need valve guides and seals are just a band aid. etc….
What do you need to replace valve stem seals?
I am going to replace the valve stem seals ” while head is still on engine”, due to some white smoke and I want some advices from you guys because it is the first time for me to do so. I maybe got all the parts I need on hand such as valve spring compressor, seal puller, a set of seal and valve cover gaskets. What else do I need beside the seals?

Why are my valve seals not working right?
Like all the other rubber parts valve seals get brittle and will not work right. While they might not be causing trouble now they will and at some time you will be using oil that you should not. Oil into the cylinders can cause plugs to foul, valves to get carbonized etc.
