Why is the timing chain on my Mercedes 380SL not working?
In the early days, the condition intensified due in part to Mercedes wanting to lighten the valve train, as M-B reduced the timing chain width by about half with the introduction of the 380SL. This design flaw increased the failure rate of the chains, which had a direct impact on warranty. Mercedes phased the double width timing chain back.

Slacken the cam box with allen bolts a little at a time in a diagonal sequence (to prevent distortion) then remove completely. If you leave the top two until last it stops the cover falling off until you’re ready.

Why did my cam chain tensioner fail on my Electra Glide?
It was the cam chain tensioners! Broken up at 28k miles on my Electra Glide. The manual is woefully negligent on this subject. I would advise ’06 & earlier check at 25k. Newer hydraulic aren’t much better in material used for the “shoe” but can leave inspect up to 45k miles. As an aside, the particles clog the support plate.
How do you change the camchain on a bike?
The camchain tensioner can stay in place for this operation. Just turn the spring-loaded wheel to release the tension and pull up on the chain. There is a 12mm nut on the opposite side holding an M8 grub screw — undo it and turn the screw clockwise until it locks the tensioner plunger (keep hold of the chain until tightened).
How do you change the cams in a twin cam engine?
On the left is a device to hold the valve lifters up in their bores while the cams are pulled. Harley recommends adapting an office-type bulldog clamp. Others have told the writer it works, but he could not make it so. Instead, for less than $5.00, he made the tool shown here from flat brass stock with hobby magnets superglued to it.
How many pins between sprockets on twin cam engine?
I like to span around 6 – 8 pins between the sprockets on a twin cam engine. Unicam engines are trickier and the number of pins you can measure is usually less. It is important to try and measure across multiple pins because the variation between new and old chain measurements will be more pronounced this way.
