What kind of wiring do I need for a tow trailer?
With the understanding of the factory wiring diagram and some of the websites for aftermarket tow/trailer equipment (etrailer, Hopkins), I was able come up with the need wiring to install this Ford tow/trailer electrics kit (FK4Z15A416A). I tested the tow/trailer 4-way connector with a LED 4-way flat tester.
What to do if your tow trailer has no power?
If there is no power at all on the tow package wires and the fuses and relays are all good, you may want to take your truck a local dealer to inspect it. If the wiring on your vehicle is okay, then the issue is on the trailer. The light grounds should also be attached to clean and corrosion free bare metal surfaces.

If it shows power any other time then there is a short somewhere between the connector and the brake controller you will need to track down. If the truck side checks out fine then it could be the wiring to the brake magnets or the magnets themselves.

Have a helper stand back to see if the running lights, stoplights and blinkers are working properly. If all the lights appear dim or you have no lights at all, check the trailer light harness at the tow vehicle.

Check the ground area for any paint, corrosion, or buildup. If any is present, thoroughly clean the area until bare metal is visible. Move the ground wire to the trailer frame if it is attached to an aluminum section of the trailer body.
