Is the Check Engine light on on my new car?
I got a new battery but it only clicks once when I try to start it. All lights come on except the check engine light. I hooked up a scanner thing from Wal-Mart (cheapo) and it says no communication with ECU/PCM but says compression good and N/A on almost everything else.

The light should come on when you turn the key to “ON,” and it should go out after the engine starts. If it NEVER comes on I’d suspect the bulb. Most CELs ground through the ECM so if the first suspect bulb is good then there could be an ECM fault. Hopefully it’s the bulb.

They might also tell you its an o2 sensor, ask them to show you on the car where it is. then buy a 02 sensor and replace it your self. saving you about a $100. remember any light that comes on in your car go have it check out and do the work yourself. saving you lots of cash.
