I did find one interesting phenomenon. Assuming the Liberty was in 2wd, if I set the transfer case switch to 4wd BEFORE starting the engine, the 4WD “engaged” display would show, and 4WD traction would operate.

Why does traction control light come on in Jeep Wrangler?
Mine does it on the ice if I give to much throttle Not lifted and I was on dry pavement not going fast at all (no way i could have lost traction). It just felt like it was locked in the rear. It was only for a few seconds each time and then would let go.

The dealer flashed the TSB concerning the problem and it went away. A few weeks ago the light started coming on again, concurrently with the ‘traction control off’ light. Happened only while braking and after many miles of highway speed driving. Dealer diagnosed a problem as the transfer case shift motor.
