What does it mean when fuel gauge bounce?
Discussion in ‘ Touring Models ‘ started by Trek, Sep 20, 2015 . I have 2009 Ultra Classic. Just recently the fuel gauge needle has been bouncing like when I take off or accelerate the needle moves to the empty side and when I let off the throttle or brake it moves the other way.At steady speed or idle it shows correct.
Where is the fuel gauge sender located in a car?
The fuel gauge sender is a component that is found in the gas tank of most road going vehicles. The fuel gauge sender, also commonly referred to as the fuel sending unit, is the component responsible for sending the signal that operates the fuel level gauge in the instrument cluster.
How can I tell if my fuel gauge is accurate?
To make sure the readings are accurate top off the tank. Problems often involve incorrect grounding and inadequate power. If the gauge does not read at all, check the power with a multimeter at the gauge terminal. Test between the positive terminal on the fuel gauge and a good ground; the reading should be 12 volts.
How do you remove a fuel gauge from a tank?
Remove the screws that hold the sending unit to the tank and take it out. Next, remove the three wires on the back of the old gauge. One wire goes to the center pin on the tank sending unit, one goes to ground, and the third connects to a 12-volt source, normally the ignition switch. Remove the fuel gauge.

How do you read fuel gauge on boat?
Using the barrel of a screwdriver or a jumper wire, connect (“jump”) the sender’s connection to the ground connection. Now, have your helper read the gauge for you.
Where is the ground conductor on a fuel gauge?
Identify the sender conductor. (Pink is the ABYC-designated wire color for the conductor leading from sender to fuel gauge.) It should be attached to the center of the sending unit. Identify the ground conductor. In most cases this will be black.
What can I do if my fuel gauge is not working?
Using the barrel of a screwdriver or a jumper wire, connect (“jump”) the sender’s connection to the ground connection. Now, have your helper read the gauge for you. If you used a jumper wire, you can leave it in place and go read the gauge yourself.
