From the new standard bulb taillight is a red wire and a black wire. So I hooked up tthe gray (ground) from the bike to the black wire and then touched the red wire to the black/white stripe (from bike) together and got the instant light up..must be the running light.

How to install brake lights on a classic bike?
Running you new wire from the ammeter back to the new brake switch takes a bit more wire, but I think will give a neater end result as you can run the wire back under the petrol tank along with all the existing wires.
