How do you find the gear ratio on a Jeep Wrangler?

How do you find the gear ratio on a Jeep Wrangler?

If you remove the diff cover and count the teeth on the ring gear and divide it by the number of teeth on the pinion gear that will give you your gear ratio. There is also another way of doing it by counting rotations of the drive shaft and tire but not to sure how to do that and not sure if it works on the front too. Thanks for the replies.

How does bigger tires change the gear ratio?

Do Bigger Tires Change the Gear Ratio? Yes, bigger tires will decrease the effective gear ratio (longer ‘gears’) in your Jeep. Increased tire size means that the tires rotate slower to cover the same amount of ground.

Can you tell the gear ratio from the VIN?

Providing the Jeep’s rear end hasn’t been changed out, is it possible to identify the gear ratio (3.21, 3.73, etc.) from the VIN? If so, it would sure eliminate some of the possibilities when searching for a Jeep.

Which is better 4.10 gear or 4.56 gear?

Personally I’d probably go 4.56 but if you spend your time shifting gears around town a lot, 4.10 may be a better choice for you. 4.56 would nearly make 1st gear an optional ‘granny gear’. The 6-speed is a little more complicated to gear for due to its lower 1-5 gear ratios but 6th gear which is similar in ratio to the 5-speed.

How to check your gear ratio without removing the cover?

One way to determine your gear ratio is to check the tag attached to the front differential cover by the cover bolts. On the tag there should be some numbering such as 3.54 or 3.73, either of those numbers would indicate the stock axle ratio.
